In our research on maternal healthcare in the NHS, we
discovered through both secondary sources and
interviews of people who had given birth that there are
frequently communication issues that cause pregnant
people to feel a lack of control over their maternal
healthcare. The PAL is a new NHS role to remedy this.
The PAL’s main duty is to act as a communication bridge
between the pregnant person and their birth team, who
will be the team of midwives and nurses assisting in the
birth. The PAL will also host separate debrief meetings,
first with the pregnant person, then the birth team, to
create a generative feedback loop within the NHS.
